Poodles at Acadia Goldendoodles

At Acadia Goldendoodles we occasionally produce a carefully planned litter of purebred Poodles. Our mission is to produce and raise the healthiest puppies possible, with the stable temperaments which make them ideal for companion dogs, therapy dogs and service dogs.

Poodles are so much more than the elegant show dogs many people picture. They began in Germany as water retrievers, and the name comes from the German word for splashing about. Today they are known as athletic, eager, and remarkably intelligent dogs who bond deeply with their people. We love sharing our home and lives with these clever, sensitive dogs, and know you will too.

We health test our Poodle parents to the same high standards as all of our parent dogs.

Poodles come in several sizes, all with the same intelligence and the same eagerness to be part of the family. We currently offer small-standard (aka Medium or Moyen) Poodles.

Standard Poodles stand over 15 inches at the shoulder and usually weigh 40 to 70 pounds. They are athletic, elegant dogs with a steady, thoughtful nature, and they tend to be the most relaxed and dignified of the sizes. Many Standards are happiest with a good swim, a long walk, and a spot right beside you on the couch.

Miniature Poodles stand between 10 and 15 inches and usually weigh 10 to 15 pounds. They are quick, playful, and full of personality, with all the brains of their larger cousins in a smaller package that travels beautifully and suits most homes.

Across every size, Poodles are people dogs. They watch your face, learn your routines quickly, and want to be included in whatever you are doing. That sensitivity is a big part of why they excel as therapy and service dogs, and it means they do best in homes where they are a true member of the family.

Since we are primarily focused on producing Goldendoodles here at Acadia Goldendoodles, we don't always have litters of Poodle puppies.

We raise Poodles for two reasons. The first is so that we always have top-quality dogs being raised and health tested for possible use as our breeding dogs. The second is that we know how much people love these dogs. If the timing works out and one of our favorite females comes into heat, we may breed her for a litter of Poodles so that we can offer them to families who have been waiting patiently. We don't breed them on a consistent schedule. Currently we are only having a litter every 3-4 years.

True to their water retriever heritage, most Poodles love to swim. Swimming is excellent low-impact exercise that is easy on joints while giving a full-body workout. Beach trips, lake visits, or even a backyard kiddie pool can provide hours of entertainment. Always supervise water activities and consider a dog life jacket until you know your dog swims well independently. Dock diving is a fun sport for Poodles who love to leap, and local training facilities often offer beginner classes.

Poodles have a natural desire to retrieve, so fetch is an easy favorite. Vary the game with different toys, distances, and locations to keep it interesting. Floating toys, tennis balls, and frisbees all work well, and many Poodles love learning to fetch specific named items. If you enjoy the outdoors, Poodles can also be trained as hunting companions.

A bored Poodle is a creative Poodle, so plan to give that big brain plenty to do. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing toys, and scent games challenge their minds. Hide treats around the house or yard for scavenger hunts, teach a new trick every week, or set up an obstacle course in the backyard.

Poodles excel at obedience, rally, and agility, and many enjoy therapy dog training, which combines their sensitive, people-loving nature with purposeful work. They learn quickly and thrive on positive, upbeat training, so classes are a great way to build the bond with your puppy from the very beginning.
