Acadia Goldendoodles is a proud breeder of F1 Goldendoodles. Our mission is to produce and raise the healthiest puppies possible, with the stable temperaments which make them ideal for companion dogs, therapy dogs and service dogs. We understand what makes F1 Goldendoodles special, and what it takes to produce the very best.
F1 Goldendoodles are the direct offspring of a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Standard or Miniature Poodle. Their temperament combines the Golden Retriever's friendly, patient nature with the Poodle's intelligence and alertness. F1 Goldendoodles are typically excellent with children, highly trainable, and eager to please. They often inherit the Golden Retriever's gentle mouth and natural retrieving instincts and the Poodle's intelligence and physical grace.
The coat of an F1 Goldendoodle is often wavy to curly, though it can vary considerably even within the same litter. Most F1 Goldendoodles shed less than Golden Retrievers but may shed more than Poodles. Their coats typically require regular grooming but are often more manageable than a Poodle's.
F1 Goldendoodles can be Standard, Medium or Mini. Smaller sizes, such as Petite, or Micro Goldendoodles, are generally Multi-generational or F1b, F1bb, etc. Below is a guide to the sizes:
Standard
Taller than 21" - usually over 50 pounds
Medium
From 17” to 21," - 35 to 50 pounds.
Miniature aka "Mini"
From 14” to 17" - up to 35 pounds
F1 Goldendoodles are the direct offspring of a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Standard or Miniature Poodle. The "F1" designation means "first filial generation," indicating this is the first cross between two purebred parents. The F2 designation means the "second filial generation." Filial is a word used by biologists and anthropologists to denote relationships between offspring, parents, grandparents, etc.
The genetic combination of two completely unrelated dogs, can produce what's commonly known as "hybrid vigor," where the offspring are healthier than either parent breed due to increased genetic diversity. Rather than true "hybrid vigor," the health advantage of the F1 Goldendoodle is actually due to a LACK of "inbreeding depression." Because they often escape the lower levels of fitness seen in purebreds, their overall health is comparatively better, leading people to use the term "vigor."
F1 Goldendoodles typically have one of three coat types: straight (similar to Golden Retrievers), wavy, or curly (more Poodle-like). Wavy coats are most common and usually the easiest to maintain. Curly coats require more intensive grooming similar to Poodles, while straight coats may shed more like Golden Retrievers.
Most F1 Goldendoodles have some degree of wave or curl, which helps trap loose hair and reduce shedding compared to Golden Retrievers. However, they're not guaranteed to be non-shedding, and individual dogs can vary significantly.
Regardless of coat type, daily brushing helps prevent matting and reduces shedding. Use a slicker brush and metal comb, working systematically through the coat. Pay special attention to areas prone to matting: behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and the rear end.
For wavy coats, brushing every other day may be sufficient, while curly coats typically need daily attention. Straight coats may require less frequent brushing but will shed more, requiring regular vacuuming and lint rolling.
Most F1 Goldendoodles benefit from professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Popular cuts include the "puppy cut" (uniform length all over), "teddy bear cut" (longer on the body with a rounded face), and various seasonal cuts for comfort and practicality.
Between professional groomings, many owners learn to trim around the eyes, clean ears, and maintain sanitary areas. Regular nail trimming and dental care are also important parts of the grooming routine.
Bathe F1 Goldendoodles every 4-6 weeks or as needed, using high-quality dog shampoo. Always brush thoroughly before bathing, as wet mats become nearly impossible to remove. Use a blow dryer on cool settings to help prevent matting as the coat dries.
Consider using detangling sprays and leave-in conditioners designed for longer coats. A high-quality diet with omega fatty acids supports healthy skin and coat, potentially reducing excessive shedding and improving coat texture.
Many F1 Goldendoodles love water, inheriting swimming abilities from both parent breeds. Swimming provides excellent low-impact exercise that's particularly beneficial for dogs with joint concerns. Beach trips, lake visits, and backyard pools can provide hours of entertainment and exercise.
Dock diving combines their natural retrieving instincts with their love of water. Many F1 Goldendoodles excel at this sport, which involves jumping from a dock into water for distance or height. Always supervise water activities and consider using a properly fitted life jacket for safety, at least until you are sure your Goldendoodle puppy can swim.
F1 Goldendoodles often inherit strong retrieving instincts from their Golden Retriever parents. Vary fetch games with different toys, terrains, and challenges to keep them interesting. Tennis balls, frisbees, and floating toys for water retrieval can provide excellent exercise and mental stimulation.
Many F1 Goldendoodles enjoy participating in hunt tests or field trials, where they can use their natural retrieving abilities in structured environments. These activities don't require hunting experience and welcome dogs of all skill levels.
The combination of Golden Retriever athleticism and Poodle intelligence makes many F1 Goldendoodles excellent candidates for dog sports. Agility training provides both physical exercise and mental stimulation while strengthening the bond between dog and handler.
Rally obedience, competitive obedience, and scent work are other activities where F1 Goldendoodles often excel. Their eagerness to please and problem-solving abilities make them quick learners in structured training environments.
F1 Goldendoodles are highly intelligent and require significant mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing toys, and interactive games challenge their minds while providing entertainment.
Advanced training keeps their minds engaged while building stronger communication. Many F1 Goldendoodles enjoy learning complex tricks, participating in therapy work, or even basic service dog tasks due to their intelligence and desire to work with their handlers.
The combination of Golden Retriever gentleness and Poodle intelligence, along with reduced shedding, makes many F1 Goldendoodles excellent therapy dogs. They often have the right temperament for visiting hospitals, schools, and nursing homes, providing comfort and companionship to those in need.
Some F1 Goldendoodles are trained as service dogs, taking advantage of their intelligence, size, and often reduced shedding. Their problem-solving abilities and eagerness to please make them well-suited for various service tasks, though individual temperament and training are crucial factors.
